Every season brings with it a new set of trends. The Week talked to Onisha Mulmi of Galz Beauty Parlor to find out what new hair and makeup trends are expected to take over this summer, and how to get them right.

Perfecting the no-makeup look

A lot of celebrities like Kim Kardashian have already been spotted with the ‘no-makeup look,’ and it is going to be one of the biggest trends this summer. “A no-makeup look does not mean you don’t use any makeup at all. It is the art of effectively using as little makeup as possible to make you look fresh,” says Mulmi. As easy as it sounds, it actually is a lot trickier to pull off. To perfect a no makeup look, you need to put your foundation aside and apply only moisturizer and sunscreen. If you feel utterly naked without coverage, you can opt for a tinted sunscreen or a BB cream.

“If you have spots you want to hide or dark circles under your eyes, you should conceal the spots with a bristled concealer and use your finger under your eyes,” Mulmi said. Use translucent powder to set the concealer and you have the perfect no-makeup base ready to go. For eye shadow, stick to a shade as close to your skin tone as possible. Creamy eye shadows blend well with your skin and are perfect for this look. To brighten your eyes, use a color that is just a shade lighter in the inner corner of your eyes. This will make you look bright, perky and ready for the day. Don’t skip on blush and highlighter though as it may cause you to look a little pale. A light dab of both, applied with your fingers should do the trick. Don’t reach for a nude lipstick for this look. Opt for a tinted lip balm instead. They aren’t heavily pigmented and make you look au naturel.

Stick to the nudes

Nude hues are a big trend that looks like it will stay thorough the summer. Apricot blusher in particular has been seen in the summer runway collections as well as on a lot of celebrities. “A lot of people are afraid of the nude look because they feel like it is too muted for them,” says Mulmi. It is, however, one of the best looks if you can get it right. With a nude look, it is essential to have bolder eyebrows. Fill in your brows with a pencil, and use bronze and soft browns on your eyelids for higher definition as it creates a little depth and adds a touch of glow as well. Use a highlighter in the corner of the eyes and right below your eyebrows to look bright and perky.

As with the no-makeup look, you can go for a tinted moisturizer or BB cream for this look as well. Foundations are heavy and there is always a fear of it running in the summer. Stick to these light coverage and apply apricot colored blush on your cheeks. Highlighting will help your cheekbones stand out as well. “If you want to go nude all the way then you can stick to brown shades of lipsticks. But if you feel like you need a pop of color, add it in your look through a vibrant shade of lipstick,” she says.

Bright eye shadows

Summer is about experimenting with makeup, it is about having fun in the sun and the word itself works to make people happy. It then becomes obvious that bright eyes are in this summer. “One of the must-haves this summer is bright eye shadow,” says Mulmi. They don’t just open up your eyes but look bright and summery as well. To recreate one of the most trending looks, apply a golden shade of eye shadow on your eyelids and use the same color on you lower lash line. Add a touch of white or lighter gold color to the corner of your eyes and put on thin eyeliner close to your eyelashes.

Instead of using just one shade in your eyes, you can combine different colors for eyelids and lower lashes as well. Shades of pink and blue, and pink and purple go together really well.

Highlighted lips

Big bold lips are in this summer and adding highlight to your lips only work to accentuate them and create an illusion of volume. “Use highlighter on your cupid’s bow and highlight the middle section of your lips as well. It instantly opens up your lips and makes them look twice as large,” says Mulmi. A tip: To prevent feathering and avoid having to retouch your highlighted lipstick throughout the day, use a colorless liner to draw your natural lip line. The waxes in the pencil create a barrier that prevents a highly pigmented lipstick from bleeding onto skin.

Hair trends

Bohemian look is back this summer, not just for clothes but for hair as well. Take random small sections of your hair and create small braids and let them hang loose.

Natural wavy hair and tight curls are making a comeback along with slick hair with middle partition. The variety of hairstyles that are in this summer makes sure that there is a style that suits everyone. If you have to go to formal business meetings, make a few corn rows starting from the base of your skull up till the middle of your head. When you twist your hair into a bun, the corn rows can be seen, adding a touch of fun to your formal up do.
