KATHMANDU, Nov 1: The US Project Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) headquarters has expressed concern over the end of Nepal's both house sessions without approving the MCC Compact Agreement.

Senior officials of the MCC visited Nepal in September to clarify the issues raised by a section of Nepali political actors on the MCC project.

The Government of Nepal had also committed to endorse the MCC agreement through parliament. The MCC has expressed interest after the end of both house sessions without endorsing the agreement against the government’s own commitment. The MCC officials have maintained that delays in project approval and implementation have deprived millions of Nepali households of possible benefits it would bring to them.

During the visit of MCC delegates to Nepal, the top leaders of the ruling parties had shown interest in the process to be followed in approving the project and it should be under the law of Nepal, the statement issued by MCC said. The MCC has said that the inception of the MCC project is solely in the hands of Nepal now.

The government negotiated and signed the agreement with MCC in 2017 to bring sustainable energy and improved road maintenance to the people of Nepal. However, the MCC agreement has not been endorsed by the parliament as political parties appear sharply divided over its implementation.
