KATHMANDU, April 25: A week of Jazz celebration has kicked off in Kathmandu and Patan that will continue until Sunday to mark the International Jazz Day 2017. The event is organized by Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (KJC) in collaboration with UNESCO and different organizations.

International Jazz Day is an event celebrated worldwide which aims at celebrating cultural differences, freedom of expression, and human diversity.

Jazz artists from Nepal, Germany, Italy, Spain and Brazil will be offering six days of free music workshops and master classes. The event will showcase a variety of programs including film screenings, live painting, a local fair of arts and crafts and concerts ranging from different genres, styles and backgrounds.

In order to bring an authentic Nepali flavor to the mix, KJC is collaborating with the Newar community of Nagbahal in Patan and the Handicraft Association of Nepal. The local artistic collective “Sattya” will organize a live painting show with live music in Nagbahal on Saturday, joining the two art forms in a unique event for the first time in Nepal.

The head of UNESCO Nepal, Christian Manhart, German musician Mark Lotz, Marketing Coordinator of KJC, Miguel Buendia spoke regarding the festival to the press where the Director of KJC Nirakar Yakthumba stated “We have been initiating such events to enhance the arena of music in Nepal. We have also succeeded to include music courses as a part of curriculum in few schools.”

Along with jazz day, the KJC is launching the fundraising campaign ‘Music for Nepal’ to provide scholarships for music lessons to underprivileged students and orphanages in the Kathmandu valley
