International conference on gender equity kicks off

KATHMANDU, Sept 22: A two-day International Conference on Gender Equity and Social Justice kicked off here today. The Conference is organised by Legislature-Parliament's Social Justice and Human Rights Committee.

KATHMANDU, Sept 22: A two-day International Conference on Gender Equity and Social Justice kicked off here today. The Conference is organised by Legislature-Parliament's Social Justice and Human Rights Committee.


Lawmakers from Bhutan, Myanmar and Denmark and representatives from NGO/INGOs working in the sector of gender equity and social justices are taking part in the Conference. 


Bhutan's Minister for Works and Human Settlement Lyonpo Dorji Choden is leading a 15-member delegation of parliamentarians in the event. Likewise, 10 members of the Myanmar's House of Representatives and Danish lawmakers are among the participants of the Conference.

Committee President Sushil Kumar Shrestha has represented the country in the event. 


Constitutional provisions regarding gender equity and social justice, status of their implementation and challenges in the implementation are among the agenda of discussions of the event which will conclude tomorrow, issuing a Kathmandu declaration.


Chief Election Commissioner Dr Ayodhi Prasad Yadav, former CEC Bhoj Raj Pokhrel, National Human Rights Commission member Mohana Ansari, Nepali Congress leader Chitra Lekha Yadav and CPN (UML) leader Astalaxmi Shakya are scheduled to deliver their views on the issues in the Conference. Likewise, women lawmakers from four countries will share their distinct experiences from their male counterparts in the event.


Opening the Conference, Committee President Shrestha expressed his hope that Nepal's constitution that was promulgated through the Constituent Assembly would prove a milestone in eliminating gender-based discrimination and ensuring women's rights. He was of the view of increasing women's participation in decision-making bodies.


Former Minister Renu Yadav sad multiparty system was the beauty of democracy and there should be the effective enforcement of laws and act to ensure gender parity. RSS
