KATHMANDU, June 6: Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Gagan Kumar Thapa has expressed concern over a notice issued by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Management regarding the installation of embossed number plates on vehicles. Earlier, the Department of Transport Management under the ministry issued a notice stating that embossed number plates are a must for vehicles registered in Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and such number plates must be affixed to all vehicles registered in these two provinces by mid-July.
Speaking at a parliament meeting today, Thapa objected to the unnecessary problems being created for the general public.
The public have also complained that the number plate has been charged exorbitantly despite its low quality. It is mentioned in the notice of the department that embossed number plates should be installed in private vehicles by July 17.

Stating that embossed number plates will have to be installed in as many as 1.5 million vehicles at once as per the notice, Thapa said that 5,500 embossed plates will have to be installed daily.
He questioned whether the government should be held responsible for the lack of physical infrastructure and manpower instead of threatening the public with legal action.
“The number plate, which is very expensive compared to India and Bangladesh, should be made cheaper and of good quality,” Thapa said. "Citizens will disobey if the government does not stop using force."
Thapa also expressed concern that the embossed number plates were not available in the Devanagari script.
