KATHMANDU, August 2: Hospitals have stated that the number of COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital is increasing with the rising infection rate in the valley after the prohibitory order was relaxed. According to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, 20 to 25 corona-infected patients have been admitted daily with symptoms. The number of patients admitted to the hospital on Sunday reached 126.

The hospital has a capacity of 145 patients. As the flow of patients started increasing, the hospital was preparing to increase the number of admissions in COVID ward, said COVID-19 Coordinator of Teaching Hospital Dr Santa Kumar Das. As the number of admissions dropped a month ago, the hospital was prioritizing treatment of patients other than COVID.

A total of 211 people have been admitted to the Patan Academy of Health Sciences on Sunday. Of them, 25 are in ICU Ward and 180 in High Dependency Ward. The hospital has been admitting patients at the rate of 25 to 35 patients daily for the past few days, informed Dr Ravi Shakya, director of the hospital. “The infection has increased since the prohibitory order was relaxed.”

According to the hospital, all the wards of Shukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital (STIDH) are full of COVID-infected patients. The hospital has a capacity of 40 general beds and 20 ICU beds. Dr Sher Bahadur Pun, chief of the Clinical Research Unit at STIDH said, “The admission rate of patients with symptoms has increased since last four/five days.”

According to doctors, patients with symptoms have been admitted. ‘Most of those admitted are in need of ICU and oxygen,’ said Dr Das, COVID-19 coordinator of the teaching hospital. According to the doctors, many of the patients went to the vaccination center a week ago to get vaccinated. “Five days after vaccination, they were admitted with fever,” said Dr Das.

“Looking at the scenario the patients seem to have been infected at the vaccination centers and the vaccine certification line,” Dr Pun added.
