By-election: Voting underway at various local levels

KATHMANDU, Dec 1: Voting has begun in the by-election for 41 vacant positions in various local levels across the country.


By-elections are being held for the post of district coordination committee chief of Okhaldhunga and Kailali; mayor of Kirtipur Municipality of Kathmandu; deputy mayor of Nalgad Municipality of Jajarkot; chairperson of Grantham Rural Municipality of Morang and Mahabu Rural Municipality of Dailekh; Gaurishankar Rural Municipality of Dolakha; Sarkegad Rural Municipality of Humla; and Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality of Bajura.

By-elections are being held for ward chairpersons of Siriganga Rural Municipality-3 of Taplejung; Kankai Municipality-6 of Jhapa; Laligurans Municipality-8 of Tehrathum; Gadhi Rural Municipality-6 of Sunsari; Molung Rural Municipality-5 of Okhaldhunga; Triyuga Municipality-12 of Udayapur; Belka Municipality-9; Dakneshwari Municipality-1 and 4 of Saptari; and Dhanushadham Municipality-1 of Dhanusha. 


Likewise, elections will be held for ward chair of Ramgopalpur Municipality-2 of Mahottari; Ishnath Municipality-7 of Rajpur Municipality-6; and Gadhimai Municipality-8 of Rautahat; chairperson of Kirtipur Municipality-1 and 4 of Kathmandu; Kathmandu Metropolitan City-16; Kakani Rural Municipality-2 of Nuwakot; Hetauda Municipality-12 of Makawanpur; Gorkha Municipality-5 of Gorkha; Musikot Municipality-1 of Gulmi; Runtigadhi Rural Municipality-4 of Rolpa; Thakurbaba Municipality-4 of Bardiya; Putha Uttarganga Rural Municipality-2 of Rukum (East); and Shuddhodhan Rural Municipality-1 of Kapilvastu.


A total of 376 candidates are competing in the election. In the by-election, candidates from 20 different political parties and independent candidates are competing.


Previously, the candidates from the NC, Tekraj Bhattrai and Tikakumari Chaudhary (Bhul), were elected unopposed as the heads of the District Coordination Committees of Okhaldhunga and Kailali, respectively.  Similarly, Jagat Ghurti from the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center) was elected unopposed for the position of Ward-2 in Puga Uttarganga Rural Municipality, Rukum (East). Nominations for the by-election were registered on November 17.
