KATHMANDU, May 23: Today marks Buddha Jayanti, also known as Buddha Purnima, the 2568th birth anniversary of Siddhartha Gautama, revered worldwide as a pioneer of peace. This occasion is celebrated with joy, worship, adoration, and teachings dedicated to Buddha, who is also honored as the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Buddha Jayanti is observed annually on the full moon day of the Nepali month Baisakh. This festival commemorates Siddhartha Gautam's significant contributions to establishing world peace.

Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (death) all occurred on the full moon day of Baisakh. Thus, Buddhists worldwide, including those in Nepal, celebrate Buddha Jayanti with deep reverence and devotion. This year, the 2568th birth anniversary of Lord Gautama Buddha, who propagated timeless messages such as 'non-violence is the cornerstone of peace and friendship,' is being celebrated across the country with hopes for peace.

Traditional pujas are performed by Buddhists, with lamas and Buddhist gurus conducting ceremonies in Chaityas, monasteries, viharas, and other sacred sites. The government has urged the public to celebrate Buddha Jayanti by lighting lamps at home in the evening. Various programs are traditionally organized in significant locations like Lumbini, Swayambhu, and Bouddha to commemorate the day.

Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini Garden in Rupandehi district in 563 BC, 2568 years ago, to King Suddhodhan and Queen Mayadevi on the full moon day of Baisakh Shukla.

Born a prince, Siddhartha Gautam was deeply moved by the suffering of the people. At the age of 29, he left his palace to seek enlightenment through penance.
