KATHMANDU, June 1: The government is imposing a ban on the use of plastic bags in shopping malls, department stores and other business establishments starting this new fiscal year.
The Department of Environment (DoE) in a public notice said that the production, import, distribution and usage of plastic bags less than 40 microns will be completely banned starting July 16 (beginning of new fiscal year). “Business establishments including shopping malls and department stores will have to switch to cotton, jute or paper bags instead of plastic bags,” reads the press release.

Stating the government has announced to bear the investment required for the reestablishment or installation of new machines by the production companies and industries that have been producing plastic bags and sheets less than 40 microns, the department has directed them to make necessary adjustments accordingly.
The department has also urged producers, distributors, suppliers and the general public to abide by the new rules for the protection of the environment.
