Under the coalition agreement, Narayan Prasad Dahal of the Maoist Center has already been elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly. However, the coalition is yet to finalize a candidate for the vice-chairperson position. The CPN (Unified Socialist), a constituent of the ruling coalition, has staked its claim to the vice-chairperson position. Sources claimed that the Unified Socialist is preparing to make Jayanti Rai, who is currently the chairperson of the legislative committee, the vice-chairperson of the National Assembly if the party get’s this position.
On March 12, a seven-point agreement was reached among the ruling coalition parties, including UML, Maoist Center, Rastriya Swatantra Party, Janata Samajwadi Party, and CPN (Unified Socialist). However, the agreement remains silent on the allocation of the National Assembly Vice-Chairperson position. Previous discussions under the eight-point agreement excluded CPN (Unified Socialist) from the Vice-Chairperson contention, favoring the UML instead.
