KATHMANDU, Feb 8: The Supreme Court has ordered the Federal Parliament Secretariat to submit a written clarification for recognizing Sher Bahadur Deuba-led Nepali Congress as the main opposition party although the NC supports the incumbent government.
The apex court issued such an order responding to a writ petition filed by advocate Bimal Pokharel arguing that the party that backed the government during the vote of confidence cannot be termed as the main opposition party.

A single bench of Supreme Court Justice Sushma Lata Mathema on Wednesday ordered House of Representatives (HoR) Speaker Devraj Ghimire, Federal Parliament Secretariat, NC Parliamentary Party Leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and the Constitutional Council to submit written clarifications in this regard.
The Federal Parliament Secretariat had decided to recognize the NC Parliamentary Party leader Deuba as the leader of the main opposition party even though the parliament has officially decided to support the government.
