KATHMANDU, July 30: Model and actress Paramita Rana is once again in the spotlight for wrong reasons. On Thursday, hundreds of Nepalis took to their social media accounts to rebuke Rana for her ‘sadist’ reply to a comment on one of her Tiktok videos.
A Tiktok user @Priyankadangol5 had commented on a video asking ‘what would you wear if you were in a car where the drunk driver kills an innocent woman and you run away right after the incident’
Callously replying to the comment, Rana wrote ‘Honey I was wearing a Versace coat which you will never be able to afford.’
Rana was dragged into controversy after she absconded from the scene of the hit and run case of Lila Devkota that had traumatized the entire nation.
Paramita warns those filmmakers who yet have to pay her
On December 14, 2019 Devkota who was walking the footpath near Budhanilakantha School was hit by a speeding car driven by 21-year-old Prithvi Malla. Devkota was critically injured in the incident and she breathed her last after she was rushed to Neuro Hospital for treatment. Malla and his friend Karish Maskey, 20, were detained from the accident scene. After investigation, police found that there were two girls in the car out of which one was Rana. All the four youths in the car were heavily drunk.
Rana was quiet for a couple of weeks but she had walked the ramp two days after the incident. However, on January 7, she had spoken about the incident writing a status on her Facebook account.
Asking for an apology, Rana in the facebook post had written “I sincerely apologize for being late on doing this because I still am very much traumatized and shocked by the unfortunate incident,” adding, “My life has completely changed after this incident. I stand in solidarity with the emotions of the public and their empathy for the victim and family.”
Now however, the discussion on social media filled with extreme ferocity and rage has again come to light as Malla, the offender didn’t even face legal charges and was given bail for half a million rupees a few days ago. And Rana being one of the people who was at the accident scene doesn’t even feel sorry for the incident but instead chooses to brag with mockery about the dress she wore that day.
Posting the screenshot of Paramita’s reply, Facebook user Rishab Sharma wrote, “Do these people think that the price of someone's wife/mother/daughter is 5 lakhs? In addition to that, instead of feeling sorry about the incident, these people have been flexing and dealing with hate like this.”
The Supreme Court (SC) on July 17 issued an order to release Malla on bail. The decision was made by a joint bench of Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Manoj Kumar Sharma and ordered to release him, citing severe depression.
Rana’s pitiless reply added fuel to the fire.
Another facebook user, Astha Shakya replied to Sharma’s post saying, “This is a classic example of privilege and power. She involuntarily committed a murder, and rather than helping the pedestrian, she fled from the crime scene. Not only this, rather than being apologetic about her actions, she boasts about the Versace coat she had worn that night? Somebody lost their life, and Paramita reduced it down to a designer coat. What a shameless person.”
Meanwhile, the Tiktok video has already been deleted from Rana’s account and she even wrote a few sentences to apologize for her comment. “I apologize for what I wrote in a reply to a comment last night but I had to reply that way as I was receiving hateful and vulgar comments,” she wrote.
However, the screenshot of her reply is already making rounds on social media, indicating that the rage induced in public might not settle anytime soon.
