Over the last decade there has been an increase in the use of the internet. Cyber bullying, misinformation and inappropriate contents have made the users of the internet, particularly children, vulnerable.  It is therefore very important to use the internet safely for which we need to learn about online safety.

Firstly, we should have a strong password which should contain numbers and special characters. These passwords should be kept secret and should not be shared with anyone. Personal information such as images and credit card numbers should not be shared as well. Another important guideline to be safe online is to not download any apps from unknown websites as it may contain viruses and malware. We should only rely on information from trustworthy websites as there is a lot of fake news on the internet.

Online safety can protect users from different forms of threats. If users are not careful, they can be a victim to identity theft in which their personal data may be stolen and maybe misused for illegal activities. A lack of online privacy can lead to cyber bullying which negatively affects users, especially young people. This can affect their mental and physical status. As mentioned before, viruses and malware can disturb devices, manipulate data and can also cause financial loss. Although you can delete information and photos you have posted it can never be taken out of the internet. Therefore, we should not share inappropriate content and personal information as it can damage the user’s reputation and can have other serious consequences. People can protect their privacy and avoid harm by being aware of the aforementioned risks and following safe online practices.

Importance of Online Safety and Awareness Raising

Online safety is important as it can protect users from harm through awareness, education and information. It protects personal information and also reduces exposures to harmful content and scams which creates a more secure browsing experience.  Awareness raising campaigns help spread the information to a wider audience. This is specifically important for school-going children. While many students are aware of the use of social media and threats caused by them, they still get addicted to using them uncontrollably. Training, orientation, discussion with their peers give them the opportunity to learn that they are not alone facing challenges. This will help them to open up and share their experiences and learn about other students’ bad experiences.

Role of ChildSafeNet on Online Safety

ChildSafeNet, a non-government organization, has been organizing different awareness campaigns and training on safer use of digital technology. The awareness campaigns and training are organized for students of basic and high school across Nepal. Through its activities children are receiving important information on online safety.

Conclusion

In conclusion, online safety is very important in today’s digital age. By properly understanding the risks and taking practical measures, such as avoiding sharing personal details, using strong passwords and being careful of unreliable websites, we can protect ourselves from identity theft, cyber bullying. As technology advances, it is important to stay vigilant and informed about online security. Practicing good online safety habits not only ensures personal protection but also promotes a secure, responsible digital environment for everyone. “The best way to stay safe online is to assume everyone is out to get you.”
