Nepali young girls, women are vulnerable to human traffickers : NHRC report

KATHMANDU, Jan 6: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has stated that Nepali girls and women are vulnerable to human traffickers.


Unveiling a report entitled ‘Status of Child Right in Nepal 2020 on Monday, the human rights body concluded that Nepali young girls and women are highly vulnerable to being traffcked.


Mohna Ansari, a member of NHRC said that young girls are at high risk due to child marriage and human trafficking. She said that 26.3% of children have become victim of early marriage and 26% of  children have become victim of human trafficking.

Ansari shared that huge number of children have become victim of human trafficking in Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. Of them, most of the trafficked children are under 18.


According to the statistics of the National Center for Children at Risk (NCCR), only 1,256 children have been found out of 2,451 disappeared in 2019/20. 


During its preliminary investigation, the commission found that the children might have been the victim of trafficking and child labor. 3,331 children were rescued from areas along the Nepal-India border in the fiscal year 2018/19. Of them, 44% were female and only 14% were male, according to the police record.


‘Discrimination among children still prevails in the family,' Chairperson of the commission Anupraj Sharma said. He further said, "It has been found that parents discriminate their sons and daughters for their education also."


He also said that the citizenship act contradicts the constitution although the national charter has esured the right to the citizen to get citizenship in the name of the mother. 


The report illustrated that the majority of sexually abused and even raped are those from indigenous and Dalit communities. 30% of exploiters belong to that of the indigenous community, according to the report.
