KATHMANDU, Feb 21: Executive Chairperson of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that the communists in Nepal have the tendency of turning corrupt once they come in the power despite having a political background of contributing to revolutionary changes in the country.
Speaking at a foundation stone-laying ceremony of the building of Narayan Bilash Joshi Memorial Academy in Bhaktapur on Friday, Chairman Dahal admitted the fact that the persons contributing to communist movement indulge in corruption and irregularities after being in the charge of the government.
Communists tend to turn corrupt after coming into power: Dahal
"While not in power, the leaders are usually ready for any sort of sacrifices, join movements and campaigns, get familiar with the people, adopt lifestyle like that of the common public. However, when they take the helm of the government agencies, most of them are usually seem to have been deviated from their political ideology. Such instances have been witnessed in the world history for several times, and indications are being felt in Nepal too."
According to him, it is an irony that the politicians are gradually being deviated from their morality and principles who boast the historical bacground of fighting against reactionary forces, risking the life and braving severe charges and jail punishment too.
In recent times, the trend has been gradually plaguing the political movement which is not a good indication either, according to Dahal. "Communist rule witnessed its fall in the former USSR and East Europe. Nepal's communist leadership's activities in recent days would have the same fate if we failed to realize our weaknesses and make necessary corrections on time," argued he.
His remarks on communist politicians comes a day after audio recording of a conversation between immediate past Information Minister Gokul Baskota and Swiss Company local agent Bijaya Prakash Mishra was leaked in which the minister is heard bargaining for Rs 700 million in bribe over the procurement of security printing press for the government.
