KATHMANDU, March 25: Nepal police has invited applications for 75,000 temporary police targeting the upcoming local level elections scheduled to take place on May 14.  In a notice issued on Friday, Nepal police headquarters said that the forms can be submitted at the District Police Office across the country until March 30.

Temporary police will be in active duties for 50 days from the date of hiring which includes a few weeks of training from the security agancies in the beginning. They will basically have non-combat roles during the polls. Their duties range from guarding the polling stations and providing required assistance to regular police force and other security agencies.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), the lead ministry to maintain law and order during the polls, said that the temporary police will be primarily deployed in the areas where there is no potential security threats to the polls.

Officials at the Nepal Police headquarters said that the temporary police personnel will be entitled to the same perks and benefits enjoyed by constables of Nepal Police.

Nepal Police's Friday notice states that women and people with security service background will be given priority during the hiring process. This includes candidates who were previously disqualified from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army.

Though the home ministry was planning to announce the vacancies last week, the process was delayed after the proposal to hire 75,000 personnel landed into controversy. Some line ministries including the Ministry of Finance had expressed objections saying the funds as well as the number of temporary police sought were both high.

MoHA Spokesperson Bal Krishna Panthi told Republica that the proposed number for temporary police was justifiable given the increase in the number of polling stations.

“There will be far more polling stations now than in the previous elections. That's why the proposed number is justifiable,” said Panthi.

Besides temporary police, the government is all set to deploy 54,000 Nepal Police, 30,000 Armed Police Force, and 1,000 NID personnel. Nepal Army personnel will provide backup security in around 21,000 polling stations across the country.
