UDAYAPUR May 11: A huge fire broke out on Thursday morning in the district’s Udayapur Municipality-7 with numerous homes being destroyed as a result. The police quoted the locals as saying that the fire started in the morning at Hodebas in Udayapur Municipality-7 and so far more than half a dozen houses and sheds have been destroyed.

The Udayapur District Police Office stated that they don’t know what caused the fire or how many houses were affected. Inspector Mohan Thapa said that it was difficult to acquire information about the incident as the area does not have a working telephone network. “The news about the fire came this morning and our team has already been sent to the scene,” said Thapa, “However, as calling through phones is not possible, no clear information has been shared. We can only confirm details once our team returns.”

It was difficult to get details on the incident upon contacting ward chairman Bhuwan Kepchaki Magar. Magar stated that he was unaware of the fire. He was in Kathmandu for work at the time and did not learn of the incident due to the lack of a telephone network in the village.

District Police Chief SP Gyanendra Phuyal said that there was unconfirmed news stating that the fire started early in the morning and 7 houses burnt down in the fire. He said that upon receiving news of the fire, the local police mobilized a team along with additional security forces and sent them to the scene. SP Phuyal also said that though the team had reached the area, the network problems limited communication.

It is assumed that the fire started as a result of wind or dry weather in Hodebas which is surrounded by Chure forestry. Even though the dry season has started, the lack of rain lately has been causing scores of fires around Nepal. Just 2 days prior, a local man, Daur Bahadur Rai’s house was destroyed in a fire that spread from a forest in Baunni Hill of Triyuga Municipality-3, Khambu.
