Foreign job aspirants swindled out of Rs 760 million: DoFE

KATHMANDU, May 19: The intermediaries and foreign employment agents have swindled foreign job aspirants out of almost Rs 760 million by luring them with foreign jobs in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, according to the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE).

KATHMANDU, May 19: The intermediaries and foreign employment agents have swindled foreign job aspirants out of almost Rs 760 million by luring them with foreign jobs in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, according to the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE).


The DoFE said that 925 applications have been lodged till the second week of May claiming a total of Rs 757.7 million in cash. The amount was collected from the aspiring migrant workers by the unregistered agents and intermediaries who are not authorized to facilitate foreign jobs for the migrant workers.


Information Officer of DoFE Gurudutta Subedi said that the fraud cases have increased in the recent years from the agents and intermediaries despite the government rules that only the legally registered recruiting agencies are eligible to work in the process of foreign jobs.

Subedi shared that more cases of fraud have been registered in the current fiscal year compared to the last year.


Subedi stated that the DoFE has lodged 77 cases in the court from the 925 cases and 176 illegal agents have been nabbed by the police.  


Likewise, 135 persons have settled the cases in the presence of DoFE officials and the agents have returned Rs 94.3 million in cash to the aspirant migrant workers. 


In the last fiscal year, almost 700 cases of fraud were registered claiming Rs 500.4 million in cash.
