Five climbers die, three missing on Everest this season

KATHMANDU, May 24: Five climbers have lost their lives while three climbers and a helper have gone missing on Mount Everest during the ongoing mountaineering season, as reported by the Department of Tourism on Thursday evening.

KATHMANDU, May 24: Five climbers have lost their lives while three climbers and a helper have gone missing on Mount Everest during the ongoing mountaineering season, as reported by the Department of Tourism on Thursday evening. 


The fatalities, involving both Nepali helpers and foreign climbers, occurred due to various reasons. Among the deceased are two climbers from Mongolia - Yukhjargal Sidendamba and Purvisran Khagbajab - who passed away on May 13 at the South Summit.

Gabriel Viorel Tabara, 46, a Romanian citizen, was found dead at Camp Three on May 21. Additionally, Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui, 40, from Kenya, lost his life on the same day, with his body found near the peak. Also on May 21, Binod Babu Bastakoti from Kaski died at 8,200 meters near the South Pole.


Furthermore, the Department of Tourism has reported three climbers and a helper as missing. British citizen Danium Paul, 40, fell from the Hillary Step on May 21, while his helper Pastenji Sherpa is also unaccounted for. Similarly, Nawang Sherpa, accompanying the Kenyan citizen, is said to be missing near the peak.


More than 570 climbers and helpers have successfully scaled Mount Everest as of Thursday this season, with 65 individuals reaching the peak on that day alone.
