KATHMANDU, Feb 22: Chairman of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that Nepali communists have a tendency of turning corrupt once they come into the power despite having a political background of contributing to revolutionary changes in the country.

Addressing the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the building of Narayan Bilas Joshi Memorial Academy in Bhaktapur on Friday, Chairman Dahal said that it is an irony that those who were involved in the communist movement are themselves indulged in corruption after coming into power.

“When they are not in power, the leaders are usually ready for any sort of sacrifice, they join movements and campaigns, mingle with the commoners, adopt simple lifestyle, but when they come into power, most of them deviate from their political ideology. The world history is full of such instances and similar thing is happening in Nepal also.”

Dahal said whatever is happening with the Nepali communists is not a good indication for the country.  “Communist rule fell in the former USSR and eastern Europe. If the Nepali communists failed to realize their weaknesses and make necessary corrections then they will meet a similar fate,” he noted.

His remarks come a day after Information Minister Gokul Baskota in a leaked audiotape was heard bargaining for Rs 700 million with an agent of a Swiss firm that supplies security press. Baskota was bargaining for bribe. Baskota quit amid a media outcry for investigations.
